The American Federation of Teachers’ West Virginia chapter released early endorsements for the 2014 election season.

The union, which has around 16,000 members in the state, is backing Secretary of State Natalie Tennant in the race for U.S. Senate, Auditor Glen Gainer in the 1st district House race and Rep. Nick Rahall in the 3rd district race.

Tennant is running against Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., for retiring U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller‘s seat. Gainer will run against Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va.

President Christine Campbell released the following statement about the endorsements:

“As West Virginians, it is our responsibility to support candidates who understand our culture, our challenges, and the needs of our people. In order to rebuild trust in the federal government, we must stand united behind those who truly represent our issues. We need elected officials who fight for public education, economic development and protections against those who want to capitalize on our natural resources with little benefit to our citizens. We cannot allow multi-national corporations to control those elected to represent our interests. AFT-WV supports home-grown leaders who truly care about West Virginia!”

The announcement included no endorsement for the 2nd district U.S. House race.
